The world’s most popular FPS (first-person-shooter) franchise ‘Call of Duty’ has seen its old, classic games become popular again.

The franchise started with ‘Call of Duty’ in 2003 and ever since then it has been at the forefront of online multiplayer shooter games ever since, with millions of players logging in to play from all corners of the globe to battle it out on the battlefield. Their current, most recent games are the online battle royal style online multiplayer game ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ which is free-to-play and their most recent title the remastered ‘Modern Warfare 2’

For a lot of Call of Duty fans (including ourselves) you just can’t beat the classics such as, Black ops, Black ops 2 and the original Modern Warfare series COD 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. These old titles have seen a huge resurgence in active online players over the last few days. According to Pure Xbox, following a recent matchmaking update on Xbox, players have been returning in large numbers to revisit these classic games.

The Numbers are Insane!

Richard Lee Breslin reported on July 17th for Gaming Bible that he had loaded up the old games to confirm the revival of these games. He found that all the old titles had a significant number of active players with all games ranging from 3,300-127,000 players and for the games that didn’t show the number of online active players he stated that he had no trouble getting into a full lobby of players in a short period of time.

Long live the Classics!

This spike might not be a short-lived experience either with Microsoft purchasing Activision Blizzard (developers of Call of Duty) we expect to see the old games become available on the Xbox Game Pass. It will be interesting to see if these games can maintain the current level of active players or whether the hype will die off before the inevitable release on the Game Pass.

As avid Call of Duty players ourselves we can’t wait to load up some of the old classics and relive our childhood with what was the greatest generation of FPS multiplayer games.

So, it’s time to get the squad back together and hit the battlefield!
